2 routers on the same network

I'm trying to figure out the best way to setup two routers on the same network, both with DHCP enabled. The plan is to have one "normal" router and one VPN router with DD-WRT. Router 1 = normal Router 2 = VPN Router with DD-WRT. It's been difficult to determine if this setup will work correctly.

However, other routers serve up the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands under the same wifi network name: Devices then connect to whichever band is strongest at any given position in your home (if a device only to simply put it having two routers on the same subnet is not possible as the purpose of a router is to route traffic between DIFFERENT networks.
